Director and Principal – Clear Advantage,
National Program Director – PSMB
Mary Egan first discovered the importance of critical communications at the age of 23 when she worked as a timber cruiser in the forests of British Columbia, Canada. Radio communications told the crew when trucks, fully loaded with big beautiful Douglas Fir logs, would come ploughing down logging roads at full speed. Fast forward to 2014, when Mary led development of the Ten Year Strategy for critical communications on behalf of NSW Telco Authority. She now leads the National Program Management Office for Public Safety Broadband — a program that will transform public safety in Australia.

Public Safety Communications in a disruptive marketplace
In Australia, public safety communication is the responsibility of agencies in the governments of the states, territories and Commonwealth of Australia. Those governments are examining how they can get the benefits of public safety mobile broadband in Australia. The planning timeframe for PSMB is fifteen years. A lot can happen in fifteen years.
Public safety agencies and governments will have a role to play in transforming how public safety communications is delivered in the future. But it is worth noting that PSMB in Australia, and in the world, will play out in a dynamic, competitive market.
The market for public safety communications is subject to the same forces of competition, value creation and disruption as any market. Disruption can and will come from surprising sectors. As public safety communication becomes more digital, the pace of change will accelerate.
Mobile broadband will become ubiquitous, devices will become smarter, applications will be developed, and value chain activities will digitise and become more efficient. If our public safety agencies want to reap the benefits of the transformation that is occurring and will continue to occur, they will need to decide strategically what role they will play – whether it be an architect and builder, a partner, an enabler or a demanding customer.
